Phillipsburg

You wouldn't know it was the fourth of july in Phillipsburg, Montana.  Main Street, consisting of three restaurants and ten touristy stores, was devoid of any Fourth Decor, there was no parade, no "happy fourth" wishes over the cash registers, and no vacation spirit from the locals.  The small town atmosphere was apparent everywhere.  At meals (in one of the three restaurant choices) the server always asks "So where are you from?" as their first question (because you, as a tourist, stick out like a sore thumb) and then give you their life story (because of course you want to hear it).  

Those who complain that America is homogenous have missed the change of mentality, sociality, and their resulting habits from small towns like Phillipsburg to Salt Lake City to New York or LA.
